How to Start Offering Professional B2B Services

By my junior year of college, I designed the websites of 2 businesses. Combined they earn upwards of $1M dollars in revenue per year.

While there are many ways to start any business, I can only tell you my story and my plan.

How to Get Your First Customers

When starting a company, you have to realize that it is not going to magically grow on its own. You should expect it to be hard and to have no idea what you are doing.

The first customers you get are not customers you try to make money off of. They are where and how you learn. The number of mistakes and errors I made are what allowed me to get to where I am.

The first business I approached was a struggling business owner. I offered to build her a website for free. I removed every pain point and reason why she might say no, I even paid for the website set up out of my own pocket.

After my success with that client, I then moved onto a new client where I also offered to work for free, but they had to pay for the setup costs. When I was done with that customer, I then repeated this free offer to 5 more local businesses which they all accepted.

How to Start Getting Paid

Each new client is an opportunity to learn. Don’t rush to the next client, serve each client to the best ability you know how. With each one, you will build up your skill level & take another step toward being good enough to charge.

Once you are good enough to charge, you can now ask all the clients you’re working with to pay. They will, and if they don’t, you either not good enough yet or you need to cut ties and move on to someone who is willing to pay.
